Highlighting greenhouse gardening

A greenhouse is easy to fill with empty pots and then ignore. It is also one of the few places in a residential garden where you set temperature, humidity, and wind instead of negotiating with them. Even in a mild Mediterranean climate — cool summers, wet winters, low winter light — that control is useful for cuttings, seed, and plants that hate sitting in cold rain.

What a house is for

• Season extension: start earlier in spring and hold plants later into the cool months.
• Tender and tropical plants that cannot take a winter outside.
• Vegetables when the open garden is too wet, cold, or windy.
• Propagation: rooting cuttings and growing on divisions in steady humidity.
• Annuals from seed instead of flats from the nursery.
• Collections that need a drier or warmer bench — succulents, orchids, experiments.

If your current priority is multiplying uncommon plants already in the garden, the greenhouse is a cuttings ward. Four-inch pots, a mix of sand, perlite, and a peat-free organic, cuttings spaced so roots do not knit, a plastic cover, bright shade. Search the botanical name plus “propagate” before you treat every stem the same.

Sizes that match the work

• Cloche — a glass or plastic hat for a few plants; cheapest test of whether you like the habit.
• Lean-to — shares a wall, saves space, useful for year-round work beside the house.
• Freestanding kit — light from all sides; needs a level pad and a purpose or it becomes storage.
• Hoop house — hoops and poly; cheaper, more temporary, good for seasonal overflow.

This week in the garden

If you have a structure already, clear one bench and put this season’s cuttings on it. If you do not, a covered tray in bright shade is the same idea at table scale. Add a greenhouse only when you have work that needs the climate, not the other way around.
